Japanese New Year Tradition:Osechi Ryori (おせち料理)
One of the most cherished JapaneseNew Year traditions is the preparation and sharing of Osechi Ryori, acollection of beautifully arranged, symbolic dishes served in special lacqueredboxes. Each dish in osechi represents wishes for health, happiness, andprosperity in the new year. <br>
Examples of osechi dishes include:
- Kuromame (Sweet Black Beans): Symbolizing health and hard work.
- Kazunoko (Herring Roe): Representing prosperity and fertility.
- Datemaki (Sweet Rolled Omelette): Symbolizing knowledge and learning.
- Ebi (Shrimp): Representing longevity, as the shrimp's curved back resembles an elderly person.
Families typically prepare orpurchase osechi before New Year’s Day, as cooking is avoided during the holidayto allow for relaxation and celebration. Sharing osechi with loved ones is away to welcome the new year with gratitude and hope.
